Don’t forget to create search engine friendly web page URLs when writing website content

web page url seo tipsEach web page has a unique URL or filename on a website. You can optimize this URL for SEO.

Search engines display this page URL on their results pages and also factor the URL text into search ranking algorithms. So, it pays to have a meaningful URL for your page and to specify a suggested URL when writing web content.

For example, say you are writing an About page for a chiropractor’s website. You could have a URL of:  /about or /about-chicago-chiropractor or /about-xyz-chiropractic. In most cases, people generally choose /about as it’s the easiest, but the other two examples are more descriptive and contain keywords such as the business name, main service, and business location.

Note that sometimes page URLs are the actual names of files stored in folders of your website code. And sometimes they are page pathnames. They are commonly called URL slugs in WordPress.

Tips to optimize your page URLs

  • URLs should be meaningful with respect to the page content.
  • Use keywords in the URL. If possible, use your focus keyword phrase as the URL
  • Use geographic words in the URL if it makes sense.
  • In general, URLs will be all lower case and alphanumeric.
  • Separate words with dashes (hyphens)
  • Never use spaces in a page URL. The browser will substitute this with a code of %20.
  • Keep URLs short and to the point, removing words like: and, or, the, a, an, etc.
  • Don’t change the URL of an existing web page, unless you set up a 301 redirect from the old page URL to the new page URL. A website designer or programmer should do this.
